On June 11, 2024, Yendi Youth Connect (YYC) successfully hosted a step-down training session at its Kumfong base, deepening grassroots understanding of democratic leadership, youth inclusion in governance, and community accountability. The session, led by Mr. Rashad Zakaria—a dedicated YYC associate and civic educator—formed part of YYC’s ongoing commitment to youth empowerment and active citizenship under the HEARD Project, implemented with the support of Songtaba.
Critical Topics for Emerging Changemakers
The training focused on two foundational modules:
- Leadership and Youth Participation in Governance
- Accountability and Community Advocacy
Through interactive facilitation and peer learning, participants were guided to reflect on the traits of effective leadership and the roles young people can play in shaping decision-making spaces.
One highlight was a spirited debate on the theme: “Integrity vs. Empathy—Which Defines a Great Democratic Leader?” Participants shared thought-provoking perspectives, exploring the balance between ethical conduct and emotional intelligence in governance.
From Knowledge to Action
Participants were tasked with developing Personal Action Plans tailored to their community contexts. These plans included specific steps such as attending local assembly meetings, initiating peer civic discussions, and advocating for youth-led development initiatives.
Another engaging segment involved mapping how youth and women can better influence public policy, emphasizing the importance of inclusive governance and local accountability structures.
Community Partnerships and Thanks
The training was made possible through the support of Songtaba and the HEARD Project, whose continued partnership with YYC is building local capacity in advocacy, transparency, and community voice. The session also featured resource persons from Kumfong and members of YYC’s extended leadership network.
Mr. Abdul Rauf of Lucky Star Academy, a key ally in YYC’s Green Yendi initiative, encouraged participants to replicate their action plans across other communities and institutions, creating ripple effects of informed civic engagement.
