CleanUP Yendi – Dignity Through Clean Environments
The CleanUP Yendi Sanitation Programme uses local leadership, behavior change communication, and youth-driven action to address poor sanitation in Yendi, improving hygiene and public health for vulnerable households.
A Community-Driven Approach to Sanitation Reform
The CleanUP Yendi Sanitation Programme (Pilot Phase) is a grassroots response to rising sanitation concerns in Yendi, starting with Kumlang fong a community grappling with open defecation, waste overflow, and poor sewage disposal. By targeting 30 households, the pilot seeks to create a locally owned and replicable solution that goes beyond one-time clean-up events.
The program applies Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and Behavior Change Communication (BCC) methods to trigger lasting shifts in attitudes and practices around hygiene. Through dialogue, community action, mosque-based hygiene messages, and a trial waste collection service, YYC is building a model that emphasizes dignity, accountability, and sustainability. Strategic partners include Zoomlion Ghana Ltd., Sama Sama, Yendi Municipal Assembly, and community youth groups.

The Need for a Sustainable, Local Sanitation Model
In Yendi , many homes discharge household wastewater into public spaces and lack access to proper waste disposal systems. Piles of uncollected refuse attract flies and spread disease, while open defecation remains common. These unsanitary conditions endanger public health, increase preventable illnesses, and erode community dignity.One-time clean-ups alone are not enough. This project emerged from community dialogue and a desire to transition from donor-led sanitation to community-owned, youth-led solutions that are practical, affordable, and replicable across Yendi.
Community-Driven Sanitation Solutions
Engage 30 households to co-create and pilot practical, low-cost approaches to sanitation and hygiene improvement.
Behavior Change Through Education
Use religious-based hygiene teachings, storytelling, and community dialogue to shift norms around cleanliness and responsibility.
Youth-Led Sanitation Services
Establish a pilot refuse collection model with tricycles and explore a youth-run waste management enterprise for long-term sustainability.
What We Expect to See
These are the core results we are working toward in Kumlang Fong and beyond.

Improved Household Sanitation
All 30 households adopt safer, more hygienic waste disposal and reduce open defecation.
Higher Community Participation in Clean-Up Routines
Residents begin initiating regular clean-up exercises and hold each other accountable
Blueprint for Expansion
A replicable, youth-managed sanitation model that can be scaled across Yendi’s underserved neighborhoods.
